# Navigation

Your theme’s **Navigation** block defines the **site-wide top navigation**—the menu visitors see on every page. You build it once in the theme; it appears everywhere.

***

## How it works

1. In the theme, add or open the **Navigation** block.
2. Inside it, add **Menu** (or menu) blocks and structure your links (e.g. Home, About, Contact, Docs).
3. The order you set in StoryPress is the order visitors see in the nav bar. You can use nested items for dropdowns when your theme supports it.

***

## What it controls

* **Links and labels** — What each menu item says and where it goes (page, URL, or anchor).
* **Structure** — Top-level items and, if supported, submenus.
* **Look** — Nav background and text color come from the theme [Colors](/storypress-docs/theme-and-setup/colors.md) block (nav background, nav text, and mobile variants).

***

## Tips

* Keep top-level items to a small number (e.g. 5–7) so the nav stays scannable.
* Use anchors (e.g. `#contact`) for same-page links like “Contact” when you have a contact form or section on the page.
* Check how the nav looks on mobile; theme colors often have separate **mobile nav** background and text.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://storypress.gitbook.io/storypress-docs/theme-and-setup/navigation.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
